  1. This document, current as of May 25, 2022, provides data and information from PATH's modeling focused on the global supply and demand of autodisable (AD) syringes, which are used for COVID-19 and routine immunizations in more than 100 countries. The current forecast indicates that, despite an estimated gap of 360 million AD syringes in Q 1 2022, production capacity is adequate to meet syringe demand in Q2 2022 through Q3 2023, due to the significant capacity expansions undertaken by manufacturers and slower COVID-19 vaccination uptake than targeted timelines in many countries. The AD syringe gap analysis combines maximum syringe supply capacity collected from manufacturers in Q2 2022 with estimated syringe demand from all countries known to use AD syringes globally, including demand for both COVID- 19 and non-COVID-19 immunizations. Three potential scenarios for AD syringe demand are forecasted to reflect the uncertainty in future demand; the forecast indicates adequate supply in all three scenarios.

  2. A reliable supply chain is often referred to as the “backbone” of a health system. In addition to meeting the demand for drugs and medical supplies, it serves to safeguard a country’s investments in health commodities, which is particularly important as countries ramp up efforts to work toward universal health coverage. The aim of this Journey of the Pill assessment is to identify strengths and inefficiencies in the noncommunicable disease (NCD) supply chain in Vietnam. It builds on previous NCD supply chain assessments conducted in Ghana, Kenya, and Senegal. Further defining the journey of medicines will help inform the Ministry of Health and other stakeholders of future actions to strengthen commodity security for NCDs.

  5. Before the COVID-19 pandemic, important progress had been made in improving maternal, neonatal, and child health (MCH) outcomes around the globe, with under-five deaths and maternal mortality falling to historic lows by 2019. However, the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting mortality has wreaked havoc on broad health outcomes.Over the last two years, PATH has worked alongside governments, donors, and partners around the globe to respond to COVID-19 while working to mitigate its impact by preserving the delivery of essential health services. In early 2022, we conducted an internal analysis to explore COVID-19 disruptions–with a special focus on the impact to MCH essential services–and the innovations that were deployed to address these disruptions. We found that despite reduced budgets for MCH, overstretched workforces, and a reduced focus on universal health care, governments and their partners developed and used a range of innovations at the primary health care (PHC) level intended to safeguard MCH care.Read PATH's full set of recommendations for USAID maternal and child health programming below.
