For more than 30 years, PATH has advanced innovative diagnostic tools, partnered with users to design and deploy them, and built systems to sustain them.
Diagnostics are essential for advancing universal health coverage, addressing health emergencies, and promoting healthier populations. These critical tools guide clinical decision-making for patient care, reduce the use of prescription drugs, curb the spread of drug resistance, support disease surveillance programs, and raise early alerts of a potential pandemic disease.
Despite their great importance, diagnostic tools remain out of reach for hundreds of millions of people living in low-resource settings as current diagnostics are either completely unavailable in these geographies or are too expensive or resource-intensive for local health systems to acquire and use.
Ensuring the availability, accessibility, and sustainability of quality assured diagnostics
PATH ensures that innovative diagnostics are available, accessible, and sustainable. We design and test new tools in the lab and the field. We help countries integrate diagnostics into markets and health systems. We create quality assurance programs to support their use. And we advocate for policies that make new diagnostic technologies sustainable around the world.
Purpose-built solutions to maximize impact
We develop robust, easy-to-use, and accurate diagnostic tools that are the right fit for the user and the setting. We have many promising diagnostic tools in the pipeline—innovative and low-cost diagnostics for malaria, neglected tropical diseases, epidemic surveillance, and primary healthcare.
Some are new forms of established technologies adapted to detect and diagnose disease. Others are novel platforms that can test for many conditions. But for these diagnostics to have a big impact, they need to make it into the hands of users. We work with partners to ensure that diagnostic tools are deployed as part of an integrated and effective health system to guide patient care and public health programs.
