PATH is proud of our longstanding collaboration with Zambia’s Ministry of Health. We are well positioned to provide expertise to the government on a range of health issues, and our experience and reputation means we always have a seat at the table. This enables us to aggressively pursue health equity through innovation and to forge the relationships that strengthen service delivery, health information, and health outcomes for all Zambians.

Reducing the malaria burden

PATH shares the country’s zambition to end malaria. Through our portfolio of work, we join with the national malaria program to test new approaches, strengthen the flow of malaria data, and leverage new partners to scale what works. We capture mosquitoes, map where to target indoor spraying, train health workers to interact with useful data, and track and kill the malaria parasite.

What we do
Our key areas of focus include:
Ending malaria

While great progress has been made, Zambia accounted for 2% of the world’s malaria deaths in 2018, per the 2019 World Malaria Report. Alongside the national government, we are committed to ending malaria in Zambia by testing new approaches, strengthening existing ones, and increasing access to lifesaving services and information through community health workers. Foundational to tracking malaria infections and health worker performance is the flow of useful, timely and quality data from the community and the clinic.

Eliminating tuberculosis

We work across Zambia to increase the number of people tested and treated for tuberculosis in close collaboration with Zambia’s government, the private sector, and other partners at the community, facility, district, and provincial levels. We expand TB care for vulnerable populations in underserved communities, create strategies to address drug-resistant and pediatric TB, and develop community advocacy.

Improving vaccine delivery

This year, we are excited to launch the new Living Labs project to engage frontline immunization health workers in Zambia and ensure improved vaccine delivery and coverage. This initiative will build upon our other projects around better vaccine data, introduction of new typhoid vaccines, and improvement of immunization supply chains.

Advancing digital health and data use

We believe that digital technology has the power to revolutionize health care. In Zambia, we are working to implement new digital health tools across the country, from our private-sector partnership Visualize No Malaria to the Better Immunization Data initiative. Investing in digital health solutions advances our commitment to collecting and using quality data for targeted interventions.

Strengthening laboratory science

In partnership with the Zambian government, we support high quality, cutting-edge research on pressing health issues – including serving a central role in the country’s COVID-19 response. Based at the National Malaria Elimination Center, our lab team also works to monitor and combat drug-resistant malaria by sequencing parasite DNA. In labs around the country, we invest in effective diagnostics to tackle drug-resistant TB.
