Uganda
Strengthening public health systems for two decades
PATH has been working with public and private partners since 2002 to introduce tools and interventions that prevent and detect cancer, expand women’s contraceptive choices, get vaccines to more people, and craft policies that lay the foundation for health for every Ugandan.

ACCELERATING HEALTH EQUITY
In partnership with the Ministry of Health, PATH is implementing high-impact projects to address Uganda’s health priorities. This partnership, combined with our relationships with a diverse range of implementing partners and private-sector stakeholders, has enabled PATH to implement public health interventions that aim to improve health equity and address emerging health threats.
STRENGTHENING HEALTH SYSTEMS
We are committed to reducing the burden of disease in Uganda. We work with the government and private-sector stakeholders to bring lasting improvements to health systems.
INNOVATIVE HEALTH SOLUTIONS
We support the Ministry of Health to develop and implement inclusive policies for primary health care, including reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health, among others. We engage policymakers and foster cross-sectoral partnerships to help address some of the country’s toughest health challenges. And it’s why we never stop innovating.
We advocate for strong reproductive, maternal, newborn, child, and adolescent health systems to help women and girls, families, and communities thrive. In Uganda, PATH is advancing self-care for sexual and reproductive health and rights through policy change, coordination, and introduction of women-controlled products. PATH, in partnership with the Ministry of Health and implementing partners, helped introduce the self-injectable contraceptive DMPA-SC in Uganda.
Throughout Uganda, PATH helped integrate tuberculosis (TB) and HIV services so patients can access critical testing and medications more easily. This work is especially important for people living in some of Uganda’s hardest-to-reach areas. From education campaigns about free TB and HIV/TB services to our ongoing HIV Self-Testing Africa Initiative (STAR III Initiative), we are proud to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage people to get tested and seek care.
When the pandemic began, PATH partnered with the government of Uganda to mount a COVID-19 response. PATH provided technical assistance in the development of the national vaccine deployment and introduction plan. PATH also worked with the National Task Force laboratory and surveillance pillars to roll out and strengthen diagnostics and surveillance systems through training health care workers on epidemic disease management and real-time data processing, with a focus on COVID-19, and training laboratory staff in six regions to safely handle COVID-19 samples. PATH is further working with the Uganda government to understand the feasibility and acceptability of provider-driven and self-administered COVID-19 antigen rapid diagnostic tests and to evaluate and optimize existing digital tools to support the COVID-19 preparedness and response in Uganda. This work is still ongoing, reaching more regions and more people.
PATH works with Uganda’s Ministry of Health to improve malaria prevention, treatment, and control to decrease the number of deaths from the disease. PATH supports these efforts by working to improve the quality and use of malaria-relevant health data, which can then be used to inform lifesaving interventions. Building on PATH’s breakthrough research on the malaria vaccine in Africa, PATH is using data and evidence from the research to provide technical assistance to the Ministry of Health in its efforts to introduce the malaria vaccine in Uganda.
PATH has collaborated with the Uganda National Expanded Programme on Immunization (UNEPI) since 2007, working to advance immunization across the country. Serving on several leadership and advisory bodies, we provide technical assistance for the Effective Vaccine Management improvement plans and annual work plans. As part of PATH’s immunization supply chain work, in collaboration with UNEPI, we leverage PATH’s Cold Chain Equipment Management tool to assess available data and help plan for new vaccine introductions. PATH also leveraged its expertise in new vaccine introduction to provide technical assistance to the government in the introduction and rollout of COVID-19 vaccines across the country.
