PATH celebrates Global Fund’s replenishment and applauds focus on innovation
Yesterday the world witnessed an unprecedented display of global unity in the fight against HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. Countries, companies, philanthropic organizations, and individuals answered the Global Fund’s call to commit US$14 billion over the next three years. This is the largest 3-year resource envelope the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria has ever received.
PATH applauds everyone involved for making this commitment, especially during these challenging economic times. In particular, we recognize the bipartisan US Congressional delegation for committing $1.56 billion per year in financing to the Global Fund—the first increase in US contribution in six years. The generosity of this commitment means the US will reach its target of providing one third of the Global Fund’s resources. This is truly global health leadership in action.
Members of the private sector also made praiseworthy donations. For the first time, private companies collectively pledged more than $1 billion. Their groundbreaking contributions include both funding and commitments to innovative partnerships.
PATH also congratulates the Global Fund Board for its previous strategic decision to fund catalytic investments beyond their normal country investment portfolio. Combined with the fully-realized replenishment, the board’s decision will improve the way services are delivered, accelerate progress towards disease elimination, and speed the development and scale-up of new tools and technologies for those who need them most.
As a global community, we will not beat HIV/AIDS, TB, or malaria without these types of catalyzing investments and the freedom they give to organizations like the Global Fund. We hope that the entire global health community will draw inspiration from these commitments and redouble our collective efforts to advance health equity as quickly and efficiently as possible.
