Resilient Health Systems for Africa: Re-envisioning the Future Now

PATH is joining Africa’s top thought leaders, political figures, innovators, researchers, policymakers, health workers, and community mobilizers at the 5th Africa Health Agenda International Conference (AHAIC) in Kigali, Rwanda from March 5-8, 2023.

At this conference, PATH plans to gather with partners and peers to reflect on progress, assess gaps, and identify priorities in the ongoing effort to develop a sustainable manufacturing ecosystem.

Together, we will explore practical strategies for strengthening advanced market commitments and increasing demand for locally produced pharmaceutical products.

A case for investing in health product manufacturing

Africa continues to bear a significant disease burden, accounting for up to 25 percent of the global burden while contributing less than 3 percent of global health product manufacturing. The COVID-19 pandemic further highlighted Africa's need to strengthen its health care systems and ramp up the continent's medical product manufacturing capabilities.

Currently, the continent faces a triple burden of diseases—long-standing infectious diseases, noncommunicable diseases (such as heart disease and diabetes), and injuries from various causes such as car accidents and violence.

Despite efforts by governments and multilaterals to strengthen African health systems and build capacities for manufacturing within the continent, there is a need to focus on enabling demand through regulatory system strengthening and harmonization and advanced market commitment for medical products to ensure locally produced products meet the needs of the African people.

PATH at AHAIC

PATH is collaborating with the Coalition for Health Research and Development and the South African Health Technologies Advocacy Coalition to host a side event at AHAIC:

Sustainable Pharmaceutical Manufacturing in Africa for Global Health Security

Monday, March 6, 1130-1300hrs

In this event, experts will discuss the key regulatory systems and harmonization initiatives that African countries must implement to support sustainable manufacturing in Africa. Our panel will assess current capacities in manufacturing and research. Finally, together we will explore practical strategies for strengthening advanced market commitments and increasing demand for locally produced goods.
