PATH as a major sub-partner for USAID-funded STRIDES Activity

November 13, 2024 by PATH

PATH, as a major sub-partner on the consortium led by FHI360, launches the STRengthening Infectious disease DEtection Systems (STRIDES) Activity: a new Activity funded by USAID to combat epidemics, pandemics, and novel infectious disease threats.

On October 1, 2024, the FHI 360-led consortium supported by PATH was selected by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) to implement the Strengthening Infectious Disease Detection Systems (STRIDES) activity. This US$245 million initiative is designed to support partner countries in enhancing their capabilities to detect, monitor, and collect data on infectious disease threats. It also aims to strengthen their ability to analyze these threats, with the goal of preventing and mitigating the impact of epidemics, pandemics, and emerging infectious diseases.

With the potential to implement activities in 50 partner countries, STRIDES will work to strengthen the specific components necessary for strong global health security and pandemic preparedness. PATH will lead integrated disease surveillance technical assistance activities and oversight for the project. STRIDES comprehensively strives to:

  • Strengthen detection capacity and increase access to laboratory services through enhancing countries’ ability to identify and characterize pathogens of public health importance, addressing antimicrobial resistance, and improving laboratory networks.
  • Develop sustainable surveillance systems by utilizing real-time data collection to support early warning systems, calculate disease burden, and address risk factors for infectious disease transmission.
  • Provide technical assistance to partner countries in building and enhancing their data collection and analysis capacity to better protect against infectious disease threats.
  • Deliver targeted support during outbreaks by assisting efforts to address gaps in diagnostic capacity, surveillance, and management.

The STRIDES consortium includes FHI 360, PATH, Black & Veatch, and Panagora Group—as well as six regional public health organizations: Amref Health Africa, African Society for Laboratory Medicine, Prisma, Africa One Health University Network, Southeast Asia One Health University, and The Eastern Mediterranean Public Health Network.

The PATH Epidemic Preparedness and Response Initiative is honored and excited to carry this important work forward on behalf of the organization. For more information, please see the official press release from USAID linked here.
