PATH announces Dr. Fredrick Were as Vice Chair of the Board of Directors
PATH is pleased to announce Dr. Fredrick Namenya Were, MD, MMed, PhD as Vice Chair of the board of directors. Dr. Were brings a unique mix of policy, research, and clinical experience to the leadership role. He has served on the board since March 2021 and is a member of the Governance, Impact, and Responsibility Committee.
“Dr. Were is a leader in health delivery for women and children. As a policy advisor at the national and global level, as well as a clinical practitioner in communities, he brings essential expertise to our Board,” said Beth Galetti, PATH Board Chair. “Dr. Were’s leadership as Vice Chair, his insights and experiences, will be critical to enabling us to deliver PATH Strategy 2025 to advance health equity.”
Dr. Were is Professor of Perinatal and Neonatal Medicine at The University of Nairobi in Kenya and Visiting Professor at The Aga Khan University, East Africa. He provides clinical services at Kenyatta National Hospital and is Head of the Unit of Child Health. He is Chief Research Advisor Executive Director of the Kenya Pediatric Association. Dr. Were is also an advisor to the national Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization on a number of committees including the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) in Immunization, Maternal and Newborn Health.
“Equity to me means that women and children can access health services to prevent and treat illness, to live productive lives, no matter where they are,” said Dr. Were. “I’m pleased to help lead the PATH board of directors as Vice Chair. Together with PATH’s expertise and reach, we can and will advance health equity for all.”
Dr. Were received his MBCHB, MMed and PhD from the University of Nairobi. Dr. He trained and qualified as Perinatal and Newborn Medicine Specialist at The Monash University’s Medical Centre in Melbourne Australia.
