PATH commits to advancing rights-based family planning as part of the FP2030 partnership

Seattle, Washington, November 15, 2022—Today PATH joined the global FP2030 partnership with a commitment to advance equity in rights-based family planning in partnership with countries and communities. PATH and other FP2030 commitment makers recognize that access to family planning is critical for progress toward the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals—especially those focused on health, well-being, and gender equality.

“At PATH, we believe all people, no matter where they live, should have access to accurate sexual and reproductive health information, contraceptive products, and quality family planning services,” said Ashley Jackson, Team Lead, Sexual and Reproductive Health, PATH. “To fulfill these rights, we need to shift power. This means challenging inequities in global health and elevating the priorities of marginalized communities.”

PATH’s FP2030 commitment has five objectives, all grounded in a rights-based approach and accompanied by measurable outcomes:

  1. Engage with communities, including youth, to design and implement models of integrated, person-centered care to more holistically address health, well-being, and family planning needs.
  2. Broaden choice by supporting country-led introduction and scale-up of contraceptive options that are responsive to user preferences.
  3. Champion evidence-informed decision-making in family planning by generating evidence on effective program, policy, and measurement approaches and facilitating information exchange and evidence use.
  4. Promote citizen-led advocacy and accountability efforts, including through the meaningful engagement of adolescent girls and other groups that have been marginalized or overlooked.
  5. Support local partners to reduce gender-related barriers to family planning and reinforce the rights of individuals and couples to fulfill their reproductive goals.

As an FP2030 commitment maker, PATH will join a community of governments and other stakeholders working together to advance rights-based family planning and holding each other accountable for the fulfillment of commitments. The FP2030 movement grew from FP2020, the central platform for family planning convening, alignment, and knowledge sharing from 2012 to 2020. PATH’s commitment to FP2020 focused on expanding contraceptive method choice and self-managed care in 8 to 12 countries through the introduction and scale-up of self-injectable contraception. Through the PATH-JSI DMPA-SC Access Collaborative, PATH surpassed the objectives it laid out for 2020, supporting ministries of health and their partners to expand contraceptive method choice in more than 30 countries.

PATH’s FP2030 commitment is being launched at the International Conference on Family Planning taking place from November 14–17 in Pattaya City, Thailand.
