PATH has been strengthening public health in India for more than four decades.
As the world’s most populous country, India faces complex and rapidly evolving health challenges. At the same time, with visionary leadership and a culture of homegrown innovation, India plays a pivotal role in global health solutions. PATH has partnered with public and private sectors in India since 1978 to address pressing challenges, provide technical assistance, and support local, people-centered innovation.

We develop and implement new approaches to prevent, manage, and eliminate infectious diseases. This includes addressing the challenges of TB, HIV, hepatitis and neglected tropical diseases such as visceral leishmaniasis, lymphatic filariasis, reducing mortality due to acute encephalitis syndrome, and combatting dengue and malaria. We provide technical support to various states to implement innovative solutions, institutionalize sustainable engagement models, strengthen integrated disease surveillance, track and train healthcare workers, and collect and analyze data for these diseases.
PATH collaborates with India’s leading vaccine manufacturers to develop and deliver lifesaving vaccines. We help stakeholders conduct preclinical research on new candidates, conduct pivotal clinical evaluations and, ultimately, develop innovative approaches for new vaccine introduction and immunization system strengthening. With our partners, we developed the first- and second-ever Indian vaccines against Rotavirus. We have two decades of experience in advancing Japanese encephalitis immunization in India. Our work extends to testing the scalability of new cold chain equipment, such as the freeze-preventive vaccine carrier, which allows for safe transportation of vaccines.
India’s maternal and child health indicators have shown steady improvement, with the most significant gains occurring in the critical first 1,000 days of life. PATH works with partners to strengthen newborn nutrition and scale high-impact, proven interventions to improve health outcomes for mothers and babies. We enable access to tools to enhance accurate screening and diagnosis among children under five. We work with the government to increase access to affordable, high-quality reproductive health supplies. To tackle micronutrient malnutrition and anemia, we work with stakeholders to introduce fortified rice into the government’s food safety net programs and use a ‘test, treat, track, and talk’ approach to support national anemia reduction strategies.
We are at the forefront of enabling digital health transformation in India. We support the development and implementation of digital tools across public health programs. From supporting India’s National Digital Health Mission to creating a food fortification quality management system to track fortified rice to bringing together stakeholders in AI and public health, we provide end-to-end advisory, technical, and implementation assistance. We enable last-mile deployment of proven diagnostics and devices, and our Impact Lab has supported over 800+ innovators in their ‘Lab to Market’ journey.
Making primary health care more person-centered, responsive, and efficient is at the core of PATH’s work. This includes improving urban and rural primary health care, integrating secondary and tertiary care facilities, and training the health workforce. PATH has partnered with India’s health ministry to bridge gaps in the health care supply chain across nine states, to ensure uninterrupted delivery of essential medicines and better disease management. Primary health care is the first line of defense against the impact of climate change on health, and hence, we are working to foster innovation and collaboration at the intersection of climate and health.
PATH strengthens global health security across India and South Asia by integrating One Health approaches that recognize the links between human, animal, and environmental health. Our work enhances data and knowledge around antimicrobial resistance (AMR), supporting evidence-based policies and action. We contribute to pandemic preparedness and response by building resilient health systems and improving surveillance, coordination, and rapid response capabilities. PATH also explores innovative financing mechanisms to help future-proof health systems and ensure long-term sustainability.
