PATH staff member to co-chair key influenza conference

May 15, 2008 by PATH

Dr. Kathleen Neuzil, director of PATH’s influenza vaccine project, will co-chair the Seasonal and Pandemic Influenza 2008 conference in Arlington, Virginia, May 18 through 20. The conference brings together health care professionals, government agencies, and professional associations to address the development of vaccines against seasonal and pandemic influenza, planning strategies for a potential pandemic, and the global impact of influenza.

Dr. Neuzil will provide a keynote address and participate in panel discussions on global pandemic preparedness and vaccine delivery. She will also join key stakeholders in developing recommendations for future research and interventions to address unmet influenza needs.

Each year, approximately 300,000 to 500,000 people worldwide die from influenza, and another 3 to 5 million people become severely ill. With the emergence of the H5N1 avian influenza strain, public health officials are increasingly concerned about the potential for a pandemic.
