Introducing fortified rice in Myanmar
Malnutrition in Myanmar is among the highest in Asia, with one in three children suffering from stunting and seven percent acutely malnourished. Fortified rice, a blend of rice enriched with eight vitamins and minerals (iron, zinc, folic acid, and vitamins A, B1, B3, B6, and B12), is a good vehicle to address micronutrient deficiencies and malnutrition.
PATH successfully launched fortified rice in Myanmar in 2013. These fact sheets give an overview of the project. The project aims to reduce micronutrient deficiencies in the population while also creating income-generating opportunities for private sector producers. PATH is working with the government and private-sector partners to create a thriving private market for fortified rice and to distribute it to vulnerable populations.
