Maternal Influenza Immunization: Lessons From Vaccine Introduction and Use in El Salvador

This publication describes PATH’s efforts to examine the use and acceptability of maternal influenza immunization in El Salvador. The qualitative study captures the perspectives of pregnant women, family decision makers, community leaders, public health practitioners, private physicians, and more. The report identifies both successful strategies as well as challenges to vaccine uptake, and offers recommendations for countries considering the introduction of maternal influenza immunization.

Vaccines for the Future

Published from 2007 to 2015, Vaccines for the Future provided quarterly updates on our efforts to accelerate the development of innovative, safe, effective, and affordable vaccines against pneumonia (pneumococcal disease) and diarrheal disease (rotavirus, Shigella, enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli), as well as new vaccines for the global population against influenza, meningitis, polio, and respiratory syncytial virus. It included updates on progress, partnerships, and specific activities related to these projects. This newsletter is no longer being published and has been replaced by two newsletters: Moving the Needle provides updates on our vaccine development work, and Immunization Matters focuses on our vaccine uptake and access work.

Expanding Vaccine Solutions Against Influenza

This fact sheet highlights PATH's multifaceted approach to expanding vaccine solutions against influenza that are optimal for the developing world. It describes our efforts to advance the development of promising new influenza vaccines, gain a better understanding of influenza vaccine performance in children in low-resource countries, and help emerging-country manufacturers produce influenza vaccines for pandemic preparedness.

Stabilizing Influenza Vaccines

If a highly virulent pandemic strain were to emerge in today’s interconnected world, influenza has the potential to kill millions of people, especially in developing countries with limited to no resources for pandemic planning, preparedness, and outbreak response. PATH's work in developing thermostable influenza vaccines holds promise for extending product shelf life and easing logistics during introduction and rapid deployment to hard-to-reach populations—markedly improving developing-country preparedness and ability to contain the virus at its point of origin. This fact sheet describes our latest research achievements and next steps in product development.

Investigating Live Attenuated Influenza Vaccine Efficacy in Senegal

This fact sheet describes a phase 3 clinical study that PATH and our partners are conducting in Senegal to evaluate the clinical efficacy of a seasonal, trivalent live attenuated influenza vaccine (LAIV). By providing evidence on how well this type of vaccine works among young children in Senegal, this study will help inform efforts in the scientific community to develop optimal LAIVs for the world’s most vulnerable children, as well as policy decisions for potential future LAIV use in Senegal and other tropical, low-resource countries in Africa.

Understanding Influenza Vaccine Performance Among Children in Senegal

This fact sheet describes a phase 2 influenza vaccine clinical study that PATH and our partners are conducting in Senegal. The study seeks to better understand the performance of seasonal influenza vaccines in a tropical, low-resource region of the country. Overall, the results from this study will provide evidence to support larger research efforts to determine the most feasible and efficient ways of protecting populations in tropical, developing Africa from influenza through the use of vaccines.

Surveillance and Control of Seasonal and Avian Influenza in Humans: Guidelines for Public Health Services in Ukraine (second edition)

Outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza are occurring in domestic fowl in many countries, posing a considerable human public health risk. Based on the latest World Health Organization (WHO) standards and recommendations, this manual provides comprehensive recommendations to help Ukrainian health care workers establish sentinel site surveillance and promptly identify, report, confirm, and classify potential cases of avian influenza in humans. In addition, the document includes guidance on the basic parameters for surveillance data analysis, investigation of trigger cases and outbreaks, improvement of other aspects of an early warning system for humans, and communication with the public and infection-control professionals. The guidelines are most appropriate for the current and the next stages of pandemic preparedness (phases 3 and 4 of the WHO Pandemic Alert Period) and are designed primarily for health care personnel working at rayon and regional sanitary-epidemiological stations.
