Global Polio Eradication Initiative: Strategic Plan 2010-2012

Alarmed that polio remained entrenched in the four countries that had never stopped transmission, and that an increasing number of polio-free areas were becoming reinfected, in May 2008 the World Health Assembly called for a new strategy to complete polio eradication. In turn, the Global Polio Eradication Initiative developed this strategic plan in order to fulfill the goal of eliminating polio worldwide. The plan's major objectives are interrupting wild poliovirus transmission in Asia; interrupting wild poliovirus transmission in Africa; enhancing global surveillance and outbreak response; and strengthening immunization systems.
