Supporting Effective Management of Preeclampsia/Eclampsia: Mobile Application for Dosing and Dilution of Magnesium Sulfate

Severe preeclampsia and eclampsia (PE/E) are among the leading causes of maternal death and disability worldwide. Magnesium sulfate is the treatment recommended by the World Health Organization, but it remains underutilized due to difficult administration. PATH designed a mobile application for dosing and dilution of magnesium sulfate to address the challenges of correctly calculating magnesium sulfate dosage given multiple concentrations and a complex dosing regimen.

Semisynthetic Artemisinin: Cross-Sector Partnership to Stabilize the Antimalarial Drug Supply

Artemisinin-based combination therapy is considered the gold standard treatment for malaria, but global demand has often outpaced production, and pricing has been volatile. With funding from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, PATH and our partners set out to develop a new pharmaceutical manufacturing process to produce commercial volumes of high-quality, nonseasonal, and affordable artemisinin to supplement the plant-based supply. This poster, presented at the Bay Area World Malaria Day Symposium on April 25, 2014, presents key facts on malaria, the market for artemisinin, partner roles, and commercial production.

Courageous Community Leaders Go Above and Beyond to Fight Tuberculosis One Patient at a Time

Freeze-Protection of Aluminum-Adjuvanted Vaccines: PATH Formulation Technology

PATH has developed a low-cost and straightforward approach for protecting aluminum-adjuvanted vaccines from irreversible damage that results from freezing. Many current vaccines of importance to global health contain an aluminum-salt adjuvant (such as aluminum hydroxide or aluminum phosphate) and could benefit from this freeze-protection technology. There is no intellectual property barrier for manufacturers wishing to adopt the technology; it has been placed in the public domain. This technical dossier summarizes the rationale for freeze protection, application of the technology to specific vaccines, the data obtained to date, and comments on the likely regulatory pathway for vaccines incorporating the technology.
