PATH at the UN General Assembly, Clinton Global Initiative
Health and development leaders from across the globe will be in New York City from September 18 to 28 to participate in the United Nations (UN) General Assembly and the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting. PATH will be among those participating in both events, advocating for progress and innovation to address overlooked health issues and solutions as well as commitments toward improving the health of women and children.
UN General Assembly
PATH will be part of a number of key events being organized in conjunction with this high-level meeting. Our focus will be on advocating for policies and resources to improve maternal health and showcasing the role of public-private partnerships and innovation in achieving that goal.
On September 24, PATH will sponsor a panel discussion with Jhpiego on the role of partnerships in developing health technologies to reduce global maternal deaths. This includes the oxytocin in the Uniject™ injection system, a preloaded, autodisable device that enables less-skilled health workers to prevent excessive bleeding after childbirth and save lives through expanded access to this essential medicine.
PATH will co-host an event with Merck for Mothers on September 25 emphasizing the importance of collaboration and product innovation to reduce maternal mortality. Merck for Mothers and PATH have formed an alliance to identify and assess nearly 40 promising technologies with the potential to save the lives of women in low-resource settings.
Steve Davis, PATH president and CEO, will join global policymakers at the UN to preview a new report from the UN Commission on Life-Saving Commodities for Women and Children. PATH played a pivotal role in informing the report and the commission’s recommendations for ensuring women and children around the world benefit from existing, affordable medicines, medical devices, and other health supplies. PATH will also help convene expert groups to develop detailed implementation plans for two of the recommendations.
PATH will host a photo exhibit titled Ripple Effect on September 27 featuring the images and stories of women who experience the joys and sorrows of life with and without access to adequate maternal health care. At this time, PATH will also release a new report outlining an agenda for global action to improve the quality of and access to maternal health medicines.
Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting
Steve Davis also will attend the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting from September 23 to 25. The event brings together heads of state, chief executives, government and nonprofit leaders, and scholars to analyze pressing global challenges, discuss solutions, and build lasting partnerships to create positive social change.
On September 23, Davis will moderate a panel discussion exploring effective strategies in designing and innovating technologies for the lowest-income consumers. He will share PATH’s extensive experience in advancing low-cost, culturally relevant health tools, strengthening developing-country capacity and markets, and partnering across industries.
At the 2012 meeting of the Clinton Global Initiative, PATH president and CEO Steve Davis reports on our progress on our commitments.
